VISA PROCEDURE

Step 1: If unsure about visa requirements, check here

https://www.eda.admin.ch/countries/usa/en/home/visa/residency/studying.html

and select your nationality. Applications for study visas must be submitted to the Swiss Embassy, followed by Swiss Cantonal authorities, taking up to 4 months.

Step 2: Contact the nearest Swiss Embassy/Consulate to confirm the required documents. Ensure acceptance by GSBE and payment of at least 30% of tuition fees before application.

Step 3: Submit the completed application form and supporting documents to the Embassy.

Step 4: The Embassy reviews and either approves or denies the application.

Step 5: Approved files are transferred to Bern for national review, then to local authorities like OCPM in Geneva for further processing.

Step 6: Certain nationalities may undergo additional steps coordinated by the Central Migration Office in Bern.

Step 7: Applications from non-listed countries are processed by the canton in order of submission.

Step 8: Upon evaluation, visas are either accepted, denied, or require additional information.

Step 9: OCPM informs students of the decision and provides a list of required documents upon visa approval.

Step 10: The Embassy notifies students of visa decisions and reasons for refusals.

Step 11: The initial entry visa is valid for 30 days, during which students must enter Switzerland.

Step 12: Within 14 days of entry, submit paperwork to OCPM for a student permit to legally remain in Switzerland.

Step 13: Once granted, student permits are valid until expiration, typically aligned with the duration of studies.

Step 14: Health insurance is mandatory for all students in Switzerland.

Step 15: Permits must be renewed annually until the completion of studies, requiring proof of continued enrollment and payment.

Step 16: Upon graduation, GSBE conducts exit interviews and reports plans to OCPM.
